More Information
The foundation of our approach in counselling is ‘person-centred’ and derives from the work of Carl Rogers. It is not necessary to know the details of counselling theory in order to benefit from it. What person-centred counselling does offer is that it puts you, as the client, firmly in the ‘driving seat’. In particular, this means that you bring into counselling the issues you wish to work on. The Person Centred Approach is built on the understanding that all human beings are constantly striving to do the best they can for themselves. We all instinctively want to be well and whole and we have inside ourselves the ability to grow, despite any difficult experiences we may have had in our lives. People often come to counselling when they may feel stuck in some way, with perhaps issues repeating themselves. The counsellor’s task is not to ‘analyse’ you, tell you what is going on inside you or advise you on the best way to live your life. He or she is there to help facilitate you in finding a way forward that is right for you, and that comes from inside you. Although we draw on other counselling theories, particularly in couples and families work, the principles of the Person Centred Approach remain at the core of what we do.
